Due to a concern with public schools - their decreasing test scores, increasing violence, and what's perceived as a lack of traditional values - some parents are choosing to educate their children at home. Home schooling is legal in all states, though in e ach state, certain regulations will apply. It's thought that as many as one million children are being home schooled. Educational results have been good. Home schooled children tend to score higher on achievement tests than those taught in the public systems. Though home schoolers are in a safer atmosphere, some feel they miss out on important social interaction. For this reason, it's good to schedule occasional field trips to the park, zoo, or other places where they can see children their own age. If you're thinking about home schooling, you'll need to determine if you're up to the challenge. Home schooling takes a lot of time and energy. Are you willing to stay home all day? There are financial issues, too. If one parent quits his or her job, how will that loss of income compare to the savings in child care or private school costs? Remember, in addition to home school supplies, you'll still have to pay public school taxes, even if your children don't attend.
