Does your childcare provider keep firearms on the premises (prim-is-sis)? While most states require a gun-free atmosphere in public centers, guns are allowed in family daycare homes. If your care provider chooses to have a gun in the home, it must be stored in a locked cabinet children can't access. Most states also require the ammunition to be kept in a separate locked area. Further precautions include using trigger locks. These are metal guards that fit directly over a gun's trigger, and are opened with a key. Other options include a locked gun safe, made especially for firearms. It's absolutely unacceptable for loaded guns to be stored where it's possible for children to find them. Childcare facilities exist to nurture and care for children. This goal should be a priority over sports or protection against intruders. Remember, instruct your children to never play with guns, and to find an adult if they see another child playing with one.
