When choosing a baby-sitter, consider the attributes of attitude, strength, and knowledge. An easy way to remember these qualities is 'a-s-k', or 'ask.' This is just what you'll do- ask potential sitters about their suitability. First,is attitude. You'll want your sitter to be friendly and concerned for your child's welfare. Qualified caregivers are alert to potential dangers and interact well with your child. Next, regard strength. If your child requires physical assistance, will the sitter be strong enough to offer aid? Finally, find out what the sitter's level of knowledge is. Has he or she worked with children before? Being familiar with how children deal with situations is a very important part of baby-sitting. An experienced sitter expects most children to be reluctant to go to bed or take medicine, and has developed methods to overcome objections. Basic emergency medical knowledge is also important. Does the sitter know how to administer C-P-R to children, or what to do if a child is choking? Once you've made sure your sitter has these qualifications, watch your child interact with him or her before you make a final decision.
