Child caregivers must practice safe and sanitary methods for changing diapers. First, the caregiver should ensure all necessary supplies, such as the diaper, wiping cloths, lotions, and medications are within easy reach before the baby is put on the table. Next, a clean, flat surface should be prepared for the child. Metal tables are easy to sanitize with a commercial cleaner or by spraying and wiping with a bleach-water solution, but make sure to lay down a clean towel or pad to make the baby comfortable. Standard changing tables are fine, as long as they're sanitized after each use. This can be done by wiping surfaces down with rubbing alcohol or other sanitizing product. Once the baby is on the table, cautious caregivers may use a strap to secure against the chance of rolling off. After changing the baby's diaper, it's necessary to dispose of the soiled one where curious fingers won't find it. The final step is required by law: all caregivers must wash their hands after diapering a baby. Question your childcare provider about the diaper-changing techniques used.
