If you thought making a doctor's appointment was hard, you should try getting a tee time at one of the major golf resorts. Reservations are often made many months in advance. Avid golfers plan entire vacations around their one opportunity to play on such courses. The situation isn't that bad everywhere, but you'll still need to arrange your tee time a day or two in advance at most places. If you're a member of a club that has a golf course, you'll have a better chance of getting a preferred tee time. At public courses, phone several days ahead to see what's available. Golf courses benefit by maximizing use of the courses, and scheduling appropriate tee times is an efficient way to do just that. The local pro is generally in charge of handling this. Once you have your tee time, be sure to show up an hour or so early. This will give you a chance to practice on the driving range and putting (PUTT-ing) green to warm up. Whatever you do, don't be late. If you are, you're likely to get bumped in favor of the next foursome.
