Where should the ball be positioned when you swing? That depends on which club you're using. For a driver, assuming you're right-handed, it should be aligned with your left armpit. Move the ball slightly back as you go through your clubs until it's in the center of your stance when you're using a wedge. Obviously, you want to hit the ball flush, so the club face should be perpendicular to the line of flight. What may be more important is the point in your swing when the club face actually hits the ball. With a driver, most of the loft you achieve will come from your swing, so you'll want to hit the ball slightly past the midpoint of your swing. In other words, you're hitting up at the ball. With other clubs, you should strike the ball slightly before the center of your swing. Think of a tiddly-wink. You press down on one edge, and it flips up. The same goes for a golf ball. Striking it on the downward part of your stroke gives it both loft and backspin, so it won't roll too much when it hits the green. Besides the driver, the only other club that should hit the ball past the midswing is your putter.
