Ramps and stairways can cause accidents resulting in slip and fall injuries resulting in a bone fracture or a serious head injury. Homeowners are responsible for taking all reasonable steps to prevent accidents occurring on their property, including keeping stairways and ramps free from debris, ice, and snow, repairing damaged handrails, and otherwise keeping their property safe. Many homeowners carry liability insurance to protect themselves in the event that such an injury happens on their property. Business owners are required to maintain an even higher level of safety on their premises, particularly if their premises are open to the general public. Ramps must be kept free from debris and spills that may cause the surface to become slippery. In the case of an outdoor ramp or stairway, it may be advisable to post signs warning of possible slippery or dangerous conditions. Stairways must be well maintained, and handrails and steps be kept in good condition. If you're injured in a slip and fall accident on a ramp or stairway, and it can be shown that reasonable precautions weren't taken to prevent the accident, then the property or business owner can be held liable for damages. These damages can include medical expenses and compensation for loss of income and pain and suffering.
