Homeowners, business owners, and employers are each responsible for taking reasonable precautions to prevent accidents on their property. Failure to do so can render them liable to compensate an injured party for medical expenses, lost income, and for pain and suffering. An employee who's injured in the workplace may qualify for workers' compensation. Liquid or debris on the floor creates a clear danger and must be removed. Even a temporarily wet floor, such as during cleaning, should be clearly marked with warning signs. Debris or other obstacles on the floor pose a similar danger and must be removed, cordoned off, or provided with clear warning signs. The owners of businesses that are open to the public, for example department stores, hotels, or other public facilities, are required to take particular care to remove any potential dangers to the public. Since even a minor slip and fall accident can lead to serious injury, it's especially important that floors be kept free from liquids or debris.
