Placing a child for adoption is an emotional process that also incurs expenses. In many cases, part of the birth parents' reason for choosing adoption is due to financial situations not allowing them to provide for the child's needs. The costs involved in having a child and placing it up for adoption can be very high. To provide relief from such financial burdens, it is very common for financial assistance to be provided. Such relief usually includes reasonable living expenses, pregnancy and mother health expenses, counseling expenses, and adoptive service expenses for the birth parents. These expenses may be provided by the adoptive parents or the state, depending upon the particular situation and the state's adoption laws. It is important to note, however, that it is not legal to receive money in exchange for a child. Birth parents may be asked to document their financial needs or provide receipts for specific expenses. Those expenses may be reviewed with the parents in order to help determine what expenses qualify for financial assistance. For more information on financial assistance that may be available, contact an adoption agency or an attorney with adoptive services background.
