Applications for adoption must adhere to a variety of legal requirements and procedures. An attorney experienced in the field of adoption law will assist the birth parents in many ways during the adoption process. After thoroughly evaluating the needs and desires of the birth parents, the attorney will find and help select the adoptive parents and arrange for their screening and background checks. Certainly, the emotions of the birth parents must be fully explored and understood during this process. In addition, arrangements will be made for the medical care of the birth mother during the pregnancy, and if counseling is desired by the birth parents, the attorney will make and will assist in having these expenses paid on behalf of the adoptive parents. In addition, the adoption process requires the filing of a petition for adoption by the adoptive parents. The petition must contain detailed information about the child, the child's biological parents, and the parents seeking to adopt. A medical history must be performed on the child to be adopted, and a qualified government agency must prepare a report concerning the financial and domestic qualifications of the parents who are applying to adopt. The legal process entailed in a court transfer of custody may require supervision of the child in the new home and a final court hearing no earlier than six months after the petition is filed. The waiting period can vary depending on the relation of the applicant to the child. For more information about the assistance of attorneys in the adoption process, contact a qualified attorney.
