The first step in using you electrical appliance safely is to read the manual. Almost all electrical appliances should be kept away from water, unless they were specifically designed for water use. If you need to use an appliance around water, think about installing a ground fault interrupter first. This could prevent electrocution and is reasonably inexpensive to do. Check your electrical cords for fraying, kinks, and improper grounding before using an electrical appliance. You shouldn't have to shake the appliance or force it to start. Basically, just use your common sense. Unplug appliances before attempting to repair them and don't try to repair anything that has the warning sign 'caution: shock hazard.
