The first thing you should think of when you hear your smoke alarm go off is your exit plan. When you encounter an emergency, it's very easy to panic and be unable to decide the right thing to do. If you plan your exits and practice your plan in advance, you'll be prepared when the time comes. Make sure the whole family is involved in creating the plan. Every room should have at least two exit routes and you should designate a family meeting place away from the home. Make sure everyone in the family understands how dangerous fires are and how to protect themselves. They should get low if there's smoke to prevent smoke inhalation and get away from the heat. Your town may have a fire safety program where you could learn more about protecting yourself from fires. Practice your fire exit plan at least once every two months. Your chances for survival will increase considerably.
