The type of fence you choose depends on your needs. If you want privacy, you'll want a tall, solid fence. If you just want to keep children or pets in the yard, a chain-link fence may be your best choice. A picket fence will define your property line and give your yard a homey look. If you live in a windy area, you should know that a slatted or louvered (LOO-verd) fence blocks the wind better than a solid one. Keep esthetics in mind. A short fence may look strange next to a two-or three-story house, and a tall one seldom looks good around a low ranch-style home. You should also consider how the fence will blend in with the rest of the neighborhood. You should also be absolutely certain of where your property line is. You might even hire a surveyor to double-check it. Before you decide which kind of fence you want, check the local building codes. There may be ordinances that limit your choices. At the same time, find out if you'll need a building permit. If so, pick up the necessary forms at your local building department.
