An older deck can be rebuilt and redesigned for an attractive and modern look. If your original deck was poorly constructed with inferior materials, it's probably best to tear it down and completely rebuild. On the other hand, if your original deck was well constructed with good materials, you may be able to renovate it at a reduced cost. Ask a contractor if your existing deck is structurally sound and the extent of renovation necessary in order to decide if the cost involved is more or less efficient than the cost of replacing the entire deck. To remodel an older deck, new decking can be laid over a worn floor, rails can be replaced with a more current design, and a sagging frame can be reinforced. Your existing deck can be enlarged with a few cosmetic touches, such as new decorative outer trim.
