Before planting fruit trees, you should first determine which types are best-suited for your area, and then which varieties of those types you want to plant. Where you plant your fruit trees is very important to the success of their growth. Fruit trees need to be planted in full or nearly full sunlight, except for strawberries and blueberries, which do better with afternoon shade during the summer. Soils need to be well-drained, and air circulation should be good in order to keep frost from settling on the trees during cold weather. Fruit trees are traditionally dug-up and sold bare-rooted. They should be purchased as soon as they come into the nursery because trees that have been sitting out for several weeks may become dried out. They should be planted while the trees are dormant, which is from December through mid-February, and as quickly as possible after purchasing. Once planted, fruit trees need constant care in order to protect them from frosts, diseases, and insects, and in order for them to yield quality fruit. The steps taken to do this vary for each type of tree and the region of the country in which they are planted. For more information about fruit trees, consult a nursery in your area.
