The washing machine washes, rinses, and spins clothes. It can also regulate water temperature and add detergent, bleach, and rinse agents automatically. If your washer doesn't work, check to see if the cord is plugged in, and that it isn't defective. Then check the fuse or circuit breaker to see if the fuse has been tripped. If the problem is not electrical, check for kinks in the water supply hose, oversudsing, and overloading. If the water temperature isn't right, make sure the faucets are fully open, that there are screens in the water inlet valve, and that the hoses aren't clogged. Clothes dryers consist of a heat source, either a gas flame or electric coils, a motor, drum, fan, and controls. They depend on bi-metallic thermostats, like those in coffeemakers, for temperature control. A dial button selects one of the thermostats to control the duration of the drying cycle and the amount of heat. Make sure you always clean out the dryer's lint trap after each cycle.
