The job of security lighting is to illuminate any areas where an intruder might seek to gain entry, such as the front porch, low windows, shadowy corners, or side and back doors. A window that's blocked from view by vegetation is especially popular with burglars. But effective security lighting doesn't have to be harsh and bright; it can often be integrated into your overall landscape lighting. For example, downlights in tall trees can be aimed toward the back of your home, adding interest while increasing security. In general, use as dim a light as you feel comfortable with. Also, avoid pointing lights directly into windows. Otherwise, both you and your neighbors may find it difficult to sleep! For safety reasons, the switch for security lighting should always be indoors. You may also want to use wireless sensors, that turn on lights, when motion is detected. Some varieties can attach to a mailbox, and activate lights as soon as someone pulls into your driveway. For more information on security lighting, ask your electrician, or an outdoor lighting specialist.
