The biggest challenge behind outdoor wiring is protecting the system from the elements. Shock hazards from water are the main concern, though wind, ice and even sun can cause problems, too. In certain desert climates, outdoor applications may demand special wiring, to withstand the sun's fury. All materials used in an outdoor system, including cable, boxes and outlets, must be ul-approved for wet locations. Gfci's, or ground-fault interrupters, are required for all receptacle outlets. But when done properly, outdoor wiring can make your yard a more beautiful and convenient place. It can allow you to plug in devices like radios and electric grills...or simply light up a walkway. Installing low-voltage ground lighting is a simple matter, and many homeowners can do it themselves. Just be sure to follow all instructions. However, wiring around ponds and water elements can be dangerous. If your project requires such work, or any tasks with which you aren't completely familiar, it's best to seek an electrical expert. He or she can assist you in the safe installation of outdoor wiring.
