There are special programs for big brothers and big sisters which are designed to make them feel good about the arrival of a new baby. These classes address the common concerns of children, and reassure them that there's still plenty of love to go around when the new baby comes home. In addition, they stress the positive aspects of how older siblings can help with the new baby. Class content varies according to the program and the age of the child attending. However, common topics might include what the baby will look like, the kind of care he or she requires, and a discussion of the child's feelings about the baby. Often, the teacher may use a doll to demonstrate techniques like holding the baby or changing a diaper. If the child will be present at the birth, the teacher may show a film on labor and delivery. There are also books and tapes available which offer suggestions on special things you can do for your older child to assure them that you'll still have quality time available for them. Check with your local hospital or a health care professional about literature and programs available in your area.
