The buttocks are typically resistant to weight loss, making them a popular site for liposuction. In most cases, the technique can be quite effective there. During the procedure, small incisions are made for the cannula (CAN-yuh-luh), which is the wand-like instrument used to suction out the fat and fluid. The incisions are generally placed where they'll be hidden by underwear or the natural folds of the body, such as in the region where the buttocks meet the lower back, or in the crease below the buttocks. Ideally, excess fat is removed in such a way as to reshape the area, in addition to making it smaller. Depending on your physique and your desired results, a doctor may also sculpt the hips and remove fat from the back of the upper thighs to better define the buttocks. If extreme sagging or too much loose skin is present, liposuction alone may not be the solution. Instead, you may require a buttock lift in which muscle and skin are pulled up, and excess skin is removed.
