Adults, in particular, can be very self-conscious about wearing braces. Many orthodontists can now offer an alternative to the familiar conventional stainless steel braces. Braces can now be made to be virtually invisible. These invisible, or lingual, braces are similar in structure to conventional braces; but they're attached behind the teeth. These braces were originally developed for adults who, for career or social reasons, wanted braces that were less noticeable. Now they're popular not only with adults but with patients of all ages. The procedures for lingual braces may be a bit more expensive and time consuming than regular treatment, but most patients say the extra money and effort is worth the cost. You may experience irritation of the tongue and speech problems with lingual appliances. These problems usually go away after you adjust to your new invisible braces. 'almost invisible' braces are also available from many orthodontists. The devices are like conventional braces but are made of clear or tooth- colored material and are unnoticeable from a distance. Contact an orthodontist for more information on invisible braces.
