Fallopian tube disease causes about 20 percent of treated infertility cases. If you're having trouble conceiving, talk to your doctor about the possibility of tubal disease, especially if you've had an STD (S-T-D) such as gonorrhea, syphilis, or chlamydia. Pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge, bleeding or fever can be signs of problems. Also, if you've had pelvic surgery for a ruptured appendix, ectopic surgery or an ovarian cyst, discuss this with your physician. Having two or more abortions or using an IUD (I-U-D) can cause complications in the fallopian tubes. See a specialist if you think you might be at risk. Your doctor can perform a hysterosalpingogram (hist-er-oh-sal-PING-oh-gram) to check the health of your tubes.
