With modern assisted reproduction technology, your chances of overcoming infertility problems are greater than they've ever been. Often, physical problems with your body can keep you from becoming pregnant. Fortunately, many surgeries are available that can correct abnormalities or nonfunctional parts of your reproductive system. For example, laparoscopy (lah-puh-RAW-skaw-pee) can laser out uterine tissue that grows outside the uterus. This condition, called endometriosis, can cause you a number of problems when you're trying to conceive. Hysteroscopy (his-ter-OSS-kah-pee) can remove fibroids and correct septums. If your fallopian tubes aren't functioning properly, a tuboplasty can correct abnormalities with plastic or reconstructive surgery. Another corrective procedure using plastic surgery, called the fimbrioplasty (FIM-bree-oh-plass-tee), repairs the fimbria. These are finger-like projections at the end of the fallopian tube that capture the egg from the ovary and deliver it to the tube. Ovarian drilling is a technique that puts several holes in polycystic ovaries to increase your chances of ovulation. A final procedure is known as an ovarian wedge resection. This is where a portion of a polycystic ovary is surgically removed to increase your chances of ovulation.
