Hyperglycemia (hy-per-gly-seem-i-uh), more commonly known as high blood sugar, occurs when there is too little insulin to control the amount of glucose (gloo-kose) in the blood. An abnormally high blood glucose level, if allowed to continue without treatment, can result in a coma. With type 1 diabetes, treatment usually consists of diet, exercise and insulin injections. Drug treatment for type 2 diabetes may consist of diabetes pills. Both types of diabetes require diet control and exercise to help keep glucose levels in the normal range. Self-monitoring can help track blood sugar levels, and allow your health care provider to make adjustments in your treatment plan as needed.
