Exercise is an important part of the treatment program for diabetes. Regular exercise helps maintain overall health, and it benefits the heart and blood vessels, which can improve the diabetic's circulation. And because excess weight worsens the condition of diabetes, exercise can be valuable in a weight-reduction program. Physical activity also helps control blood sugar. Since muscles use more glucose during vigorous activity, exercise can help decrease the blood glucose level. It also makes the cells more sensitive to insulin, enabling them to use it more efficiently. Diabetics, however, must be careful not to let exercise decrease their blood glucose level too much. A physician can best design an exercise program appropriate to the patient's condition. Consult a doctor for more information about diabetes and exercise.
