Endoscopic (END-OH-SCOP-IC) surgery, using fiber optics enabling the surgeon to see inside the body, has greatly reduced both the scarring and recovery time for many operations. Still, while small scars may be acceptable elsewhere, most people don't want them on their faces. If you're facing the prospect of sinus or other surgery on your nose, some sort of plastic surgery is normally recommended afterwards to eliminate scarring. For this reason, facial plastic surgery has been included in the category of otolaryngology (OH-TOE-LAIR-IN-JOLLA-GEE), along with seeing an ear, nose and throat specialist. Nasal reconstruction surgery may also be used to repair a broken nose, correct a nasal birth defect such as a deviated septum, or just to improve your appearance. The surgery is as much artistic as technical, and you'll be expected to spend a session with the physician to discuss the appearance of your new nose. There are many valid medical reasons for choosing nasal surgery, but there's nothing wrong with looking a little better too!
