A safe deposit box is a locked compartment at a bank that can be rented month to month for a fee. Safe deposit boxes are ideal places to keep original documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, and stock certificates, which can be difficult or time-consuming to replace. You should also consider placing in a safe deposit box any items of jewelry that you do not wear often, or that are worth a great deal, either for sentimental reasons or cash value. A safe deposit box makes a great place to store back-up disks for your computer files. You can even talk with your insurance company to find out what items would be best kept in your safe deposit box, rather than at home. To select a bank to open a safe deposit box, start by speaking to the bank where you hold your personal checking or savings accounts. Ask about the fees charged, what identification is required to gain access to the box, and what hours you are allowed to open the box. For more information about safe deposit boxes, contact your local financial institution.
