JavaScript is Microsoft's version of Java. It's simpler to write and can be used to add interactivity to plain old web pages. JavaScript code is written within the H-T-M-L of the page itself, and can be viewed by many of the older browsers. Java, on the other hand, is a separate computer language. Like graphics files, it's linked to the main document rather than imbedded in it. Although JavaScript is simpler, it's also far more limited than Java. There are many things that it can't do which require a Java program. JavaScript can be written with any text editor, and can be used in combination with Java to create many spectacular Web effects. JavaScript tutorials are available in book form, or can be freely accessed on the Web.
