A complex system of host computers, communication equipment, and wires are used when transferring messages and files to your computer. Suppose you want to see a weather image on your PC and your Internet connection is through a modem to an Internet provider. Your request includes your computer's Internet address and the Internet address of the computer that will issue your data to you. Your computer software sends the request through a special computer, or router, that locates other routers and passes data to them. This request passes over high speed transmission lines until the correct router and its associated server are found. The server processes the request, then sends the correct data back through the system of routers and lines until the data locates your computer. For more information on messages and files, please contact your local Internet service provider.
