Archie is a rare tool on the internet, in that it only does one thing. Archie helps users find files available on anonymous FTP servers. You must know part or all of the file name you're looking for in order for Archie to find it properly. Archie checks databases and looks for any files that match the description given. You can access Archie through Telnet, or you can use an Archie program if one exists on your Internet provider's host server. Once you have entered Archie, enter enough information for Archie to search the databases. Archie will show the file transfer protocol address and subdirectories of the file you requested. Different Archie servers get different amounts of use, so you may have to alternate servers until you find one with a reasonable response time. For more information on Archie, please contact your local Internet service provider.
