Your modem connects your computer to the bank's through telephone lines, after which you can perform most of the banking services that used to be done in person. You can transfer funds between your checking and savings accounts, pay bills, or keep your account up to date by adding interest as soon as it's paid. Since you want to keep your personal financial information confidential, most banks will offer special software for secure transmission over the Internet. There may be an additional charge for electronic banking, but the Internet will cut down on the time you spend standing in line.
