Your skin is made up of millions of living cells. Everyday, thousands of cells die and are replaced by cells formed below their surface. As we age, the process of cell replacement becomes slower. Some factors that hasten the skin aging process are: environmental conditions; such as the sun, dust, and smog, unhealthy habits; such as smoking, improper diet, and vitamin deficiencies, as well as stress and hormonal conditionals, and pregnancy or menopause. Skin rejuvenation consists of several different procedures that help the skin shed layers of damaged cells and expose a new rejuvenated layer of skin. The new layer is more even in color and texture, while some of the fine wrinkles have decreased. Skin rejuvenation procedures are not limited to the face and neck area. These procedures can be applied to the hands, arms, upper chest, and back. The end result is a healthier, more youthful, and refreshed appearance. Skin rejuvenation procedures include a light manual exfoliating (ex-FOAL-ee-ate-ing) procedure, light, medium, and heavy peels, and dermabrasion (derm-uh-BRAY-shun). Depending on the type of procedure, time away from work can range from none to two weeks. Also, the amount of outdoor activity may be limited from one week to several months, depending on the type of skin rejuvenating procedure performed. Regardless of the type of procedure performed, cleansing, moisturizers, sunscreen, and proper diet and exercise are all important to keep your skin looking healthier and refreshed. For additional information on skin treatments and facial rejuvenation, contact a cosmetic or plastic surgeon.
