In addition to working in beauty salons as a hairstylist or manicurist, those graduating from cosmetology school also have the option of becoming a beauty consultant. Beauty or image consultants typically sell cosmetics and various beauty products, and show their customers how to use these items to look their best. The consultant may do live make-overs or cosmetic demonstrations. He or she may also advise on the styles and colors of clothing that are flattering to each individual. Typically, the education of a beauty consultant is similar or identical to that of a cosmetologist, though this may vary by school. Common courses include hair styling, skin care, and makeup artistry. A few schools may have specialty courses relating to beauty consultant work. The requirements for various cosmetology degrees are set by each state, and may range from 1,200 (twelve hundred) to 2,100 (twenty-one hundred) hours of instruction. Some states also require additional supervised training on the job. After graduation, the student may apply for a consultant position with a department store, drug store, or other employer. Another option for graduates is to start their own business as an independent beauty consultant. However, this path is usually sought after the student acquires some practical experience working for others.
