Public awareness regarding pollution really took off in the 70's. As a result, new methods were developed to curb the pollution problems. One major contributor to air pollution was automobile exhaust. Pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydro carbons and oxides of nitrogen were a problem automakers were forced to deal with. Development of emission control systems was under way. Today, the main pollution control devices are the catalytic converter, the E.G.R. or Exhaust Gas Recirculation, the air injection system and the positive crankcase ventilation system. These systems use one of two methods of emission control. They either convert the harmful emissions into safer gases like carbon dioxide or water vapor or they restrict pollutants from forming altogether.
