The fuel system in your car includes parts as simple as the fuel tank to the carburetor which is probably the most complex instrument. In between, you'll find the fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel filter and air filter. Gasoline is drawn from the tank through the fuel lines by the fuel pump and forced through the fuel filter before entering the carburetor. The carburetor's function is to correctly mix the incoming fuel with air that is sucked in through the air filter. It takes precise measuring, the ideal mixture being 14.7 parts air to one part fuel. Too much of one or too little of another is often described as a rich or lean mixture. This can often adversely affect the performance of your car. Once the fuel and air are correctly mixed into a fine mist, it's drawn into the intake manifold, through the intake valves and into the cylinders for ignition.
