Without oil, the tightly fitting surfaces of your automobile's metal moving parts would wear out very quickly. Metal against metal creates friction, friction causes heat, and heat results in wear. Proper lubrication of the internal parts of your engine means filling it with the proper type, weight, and amount of oil. Check your owner's manual for the proper weight of oil for your car. In summer, you'll need a thicker weight oil, in winter, a thinner weight oil. You'll also need to make sure your oil is at the proper level. Be sure to check your oil every time you add gas, or at least every other week. One of the most expensive auto repair bills is engine replacement. One the cheapest items you can buy to prevent it is oil. Lubrication of the internal parts of your engine is essential. Lubrication of the external parts of your car, however, is not as common, or necessary as it once was. Older cars have fittings, mostly on the car's underside, where metal joins metal, and these have to be greased in order to prevent friction. On most modern vehicles, however, these fittings are factory sealed and do not require any kind of lubrication or maintenance.
