Getting stranded on the road can be a frustrating, even frightening experience, so it's important to take precautions. First, make sure you have an adequate spare in case of a flat tire. Second, carry a safety kit that contains basic survival items like food, blankets, automotive tools, an empty gas canister, road flares, and a first aid kit. Another idea is to equip your car with a CB (C-B) radio, or bring along a cell phone so you can call a tow truck, or contact the police, without having to leave your car. If you do become stranded, place a 'Send Help' sign on the rear window and remain in your car with the doors locked and the windows rolled up until help arrives, weather permitting. If someone offers to help you, slightly crack your window and ask him or her to call the police. Don't walk or hitchhike. You could be in danger of being struck by a passing car, or someone could force you into another vehicle. When driving, you may notice people outside their car who need help. Take note of how many people there are, the characteristics of the car and where it's located, then call the highway patrol. Remember to always plan trips ahead of time and tell someone what route you'll be taking. To avoid becoming a victim of a highway breakdown, always keep your car in good driving condition.
