An important option to consider when purchasing a car is a security system. A security system can play an instrumental role in protecting your vehicle from theft or vandalism. Like car stereos, they range significantly in price according to how complex of a system you want. A basic system priced at less than a hundred dollars might consist of an ear-piercing alarm that sounds off when an intruder breaks into your car. A more expensive, state-of-the-art alarm system may contain camouflaged wiring, multiple sound devices, and even a pager system to notify you of a security violation. Most experts agree, however, that the most effective security systems are ones that prevent thieves from ever starting your car. This type of system often consists of a well-hidden on/off switch that you can control to kill power to the ignition, the fuel pump, or both. Consequently, even if a thief is able to break into your car, he or she won't be able to start it if the switch is off. It's important to remember that security systems, even the best ones available, can't guarantee your car won't be tampered with or stolen. These systems, however, can make it more difficult for car thieves to succeed by significantly shortening the time they have to act before you or someone else is alerted. For more information on security systems, consult an auto dealer or a car buying professional.
