When it comes to choosing a mechanic, you often find that you get what you pay for. You'll find cheap mechanics, expensive mechanics, and everything in between, but don't be fooled by the price. In the world of car repair, the lowest price isn't always the best deal. A cheap mechanic may have inadequate training, use outdated equipment and cheap parts, or offer no warranties. Your best bet is to find a reliable mechanic that charges a fair price. That's not always easy, however. You first need to determine whether the repair requires a specialist, like a transmission expert. A specialist can cost a little more, but you will be receiving service from a trained professional. If a general repair shop can handle the job, ask around town or call friends for a recommendation. Good 'word of mouth' is often a positive sign. You'll need to know if the mechanic is reliable, has technical certification, and quotes accurate estimates. Once you find a good mechanic, you should try to build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. Go back to the same shop when you need car repair or maintenance. Over time, a good mechanic can become a good friend.
