The engine oil you select is very important. It lubricates, reduces heat, quiets engine noise, fights corrosion and with the help of the oil filter, removes dirt and particles. Choose your oil by classification and viscosity. The petroleum institute assigns classifications to oil. Look for A.P.I. approved oil with an S.F. rating. This S.F. rating means it meets or exceeds manufacturer requirements. How well your engine oil flows is called viscosity. The amount of viscosity your engine needs depends on what kind of climate the car will be operating in. Colder weather requires thinner, less resistant oil while hot climates need thicker oil that can stand up to increased temperatures. The S.A.E., or Society of Automobile Engineers, rates oil viscosity by numbers ranging from five to fifty. The lower the number, the thinner the oil viscosity. Consult your owners manual to find the proper oil for your car in your climate.
