The best way to keep from getting into an emergency situation when you get a flat is to make sure you have a good spare and working jack in your car. It's also a good idea to periodically inspect your tires visually for visual signs of excessive wear or damage. If you're driving and you get a flat, apply the brakes gently and pull off the road as far as you can. If you've never changed a flat before, the side of the road may not be the best place to learn. Sometimes it's a better idea to call or walk for some help. Try to avoid driving your car with a flat. This can damage the tire, wheel, and steering. An item that can come in very handy when you have a problem with your tire is an aerosol flat fixer. It can inflate and seal your flat tire if there's only minor damage. When fixing a flat, make sure you have a level surface for the jack. Your spare tire should only be used as long as it takes to get to a mechanic to have the flat fixed. Your car's owner's manual should have detailed instructions for changing a flat tire.
