Instead of using a carburetor to regulate the air/fuel mixture, fuel injection systems use an engine driven pump or a mechanical fuel regulator. Like the name suggests, fuel injection involves spraying or injecting the air/fuel mixture directly into either the intake manifold on gasoline engines or into the cylinder on diesel engines. The more sophisticated electronic fuel injection systems are controlled by a master electronic control unit. This unit receives information about engine operating conditions through electronic sensors. Through constant evaluation of the information, the control unit can automatically accommodate for changing conditions. When it comes to controlling the air/fuel mixture, fuel injection consistently outperforms conventional carburetors. And that's why more new cars and trucks are equipped with fuel injection.
