Front-wheel drive means that only the front wheels of your automobile receive power from the transmission. On the other hand, in rear-wheel drive automobiles, only the rear wheels receive power. One of the advantages to front-wheel drive is better traction on wet and slippery surfaces. This is due to the placement of the engine and transmission over the front 'driving' wheels, thereby shifting the bulk of the weight toward the front of the automobile. This arrangement also allows for more passenger space. Rear-wheel drive vehicles' components are spread out over the length of the vehicle, allowing room for the heavy-duty components needed for hauling or towing. For this reason, it's best not to overload your vehicle, or pull another vehicle with a front-wheel drive automobile. Extensive hauling or towing with any type of vehicle, especially a front-wheel drive auto not designed for it, could result in unwanted transmission damage.
