-Wednesday February 9th
Materials:
-Drinking Glass of Water
-4 Paper Towels
-1 Dinner Plate
Procedure:
Fill a water glass to the top with water. Place 4 paper towels and then a plate on top o fthe water glass. Now turn everything upside down. After about 1 minute you can lift the glass and the plate will remain attached to the towels and glass. Your china is just fine Grandma!
What's Happening?
When you turn the apparatus over a very small amount of water escapes increasing the space that air occupies inside the glass. That means we have slightly reduced air pressure with whatever air is inside the glass. With a seal at the base and slightly reduced air pressure in the glass the outside air pressure, pushing in all directions at 14.7 pounds per square inch, holds the water in the upside-down glass.
