Bernoulli's Toilet Paper
Materials:
- Electric Leaf Blower
- Roll of Toilet Tissue
- Dowel Rod
- Extension Cord
Procedure:
Select a 2' dowel rod that fits through the tube at the center of the tissue roll. Place the roll of tissue on the dowel rod and unroll 1' to 2' of tissue. Allow the unrolled tissue to hang loosely off the roll. Hold the dowel rod horizontally with the roll unrolling away from you. Turn the blower on and aim the airstream just over the top of the roll. The hanging tissue should rise and unroll at a rapid pace.
Explanation:
What's going on? Increasing the velocity of a fluid, (air), over the toilet paper lowers the pressure of the air pushing on it. The toilet paper is lifted because there is a sufficient number of air molecules striking the lower side of the tissue roll to overcome the force of gravity and the lower pressure on the upper side. Air is blown out of most leaf blowers at 100-150 mph. At that speed pressure on the upper side of the tissue is reduced dramatically. Thanks Bernoulli!
