- Fuji Film Canister
- Alka Seltzer Tablets
- Warm Water
- Empty 16 oz. Soda Bottle
- A Round Balloon
- Measuring Cup
Procedure
First we will blow up a balloon and then we will create our rocket. First, break up two seltzer tablets and place them in a soda bottle. Pour a quarter cup of water into the bottle and quickly put the opening of the balloon over the top of the bottle. Swish the contents around several times and observe what happens to the balloon. Now for the rocket! Fill a film canister ½ full with warm water. Drop in ¼ tablet of Alka Seltzer. Snap the lid tightly on the canister, turn it over on a hard surface and stand back.
Explanation
When Alka Seltzer dissolves in water a chemical change takes place and carbon dioxide is formed. Most seltzer tablets contain sodium bicarbonate, (baking soda), and dehydrated citric acid. When the tablet is dropped in water the citric acid combines with the baking soda, a chemical reaction occurs, creating gas and salt. In a closed can the gas has no place to go, since it is already filled with air. The pressure inside the film can eventually blows the top off.
