-Tuesday February 8th
Materials:
-1/2 Gallon of Liquid Nitrogen
-Big Stainless Steel Dewar
-2-3 Tbspns. Liquid Dish Soap
-2 Gallon Plastic Bucket with 2-3 LIters of Warm Water
-10'-12' Plastic Tarp
-Cryo Gloves
-Safety Glasses
Procedure:
Put 2-3 liters of warm water and 2-3 tbsp. of dish detergent into the bucket. Hold the dewar overhand, with one hand under the back edge of the dewar and one curled over the front lip. Make sure you are wearing cryo gloves and goggles. Drop all the liquid nitrogen into the bucket. The more force you drop it in with the bigger the explosion of soap suds.
What's Happening?
The water in the bucket is much warmer than the liquid nitrogen. When the liquid nitrogen is dumped into the bucket it warms up very rapidly. When you heat a liquid rapidly it turns into a gas. The soap lets you see the nitrogen gas because the bubbles are created with nitrogen.
