Local 12 WKRC-TV is the CBS affiliate in Cincinnati-Ohio, the 35th largest market in the United States.
Owned by Newport Television, Local12 serves viewers in SW Ohio, Northern Kentucky and SE Indiana. The station was licensed by the FCC in April 1949, and has built its reputation based upon its 60 year commitment to providing area viewers with the most up-to-date news, information, weather reports, and entertainment. Local12 devotes considerable effort to serving the needs and interests of the community.
Community needs and viewer safety always in mind, in 1989 Local 12 became the first Cincinnati television station to install its own Doppler radar. And in 2009 WKRC began broadcasting all Local 12 Newscasts in high definition (HD).
Local 12 WKRC TV, in June 1996, switched network affiliations from ABC to CBS. The station began broadcasting its signal via HDTV in October 1998. In 2006, WKRC became a duopoly with the creation of The CW Network.
Local 12 News produces 40 hours of news per week including six and a half hours of local news daily (M-F), plus a two-hour newscast on Saturday mornings, a daily 10pm newscast on Local 12.2 the CW Cincinnati and a half-hour “Newsmakers” show. Local 12 News Live at Eleven has been number one in its time period for more than a decade and has the top rated morning and noon newscasts in the market.
In addition, CBS News provides another 17 and a half hours of news and public affairs programming each week. Fully one-third of LOCAL 12’s 168-hour broadcast week is comprised of news and public affairs programming.
The station returns approximately $3 million in media value back to community groups in the Tri-State area in the form of free public service announcements. Some 5,000 PSAs air during the course of a typical year.
