During the month of October, Local 12 meteorologist Tim Hedrick and anchor Kit Andrews waged a Cookie War to take a bite out of tuition for inner city school children. Today, they are presenting the check for the money earned during the contest and revealing their secret cookie recipes-scroll down to find out how they're made!
The cookies were baked by Busken Bakery and sold at Busken's and Remke Markets. Proceeds will provide tuition assistance for Catholic school kids on both sides of the river, including the children at Saint Boniface in Northside.
81 percent of these children come from single family homes, 89 percent are at or below the poverty level. Tuition is the cost of the education: $5,750 per student. No one here can afford to pay that in full.
"Some of our families are able to pay several dollars a week, some pay more."
The Catholic Inner City Schools Education Fund pays the rest. The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin began the effort, nearly thirty years ago, saying education is the best way to break the cycle of poverty…. and he was right.
Most of the students who graduate from St. Boniface go on to graduate from area Catholic high schools, and beyond.
