Army Staff Sergeant Matt Maupin died sometime after April 9, 2004 after he was taken hostage by insurgents in Iraq. Maupin's body was discovered and identified nearly four years later after an intensive search by fellow soldiers.
Maupin was 20 years old when his convoy came under attack and he was captured. The Batavia native lived in Union Township and graduated from Glen Este High School.
After his capture, Maupin's parents formed the Yellow Ribbon Center as a way to help with the search for their son and as a headquarters for work to aid in the care of other soldiers.
